What is Arvigo® Treatment?

The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy ® is a system of the traditional Maya abdominal massage. Dr. Rosita Arvigo dedicates much of her life to the study, standardization, and dissemination of the techniques she learned in Belize. Thanks to the work of Dr. Arvigo to share this healing modality with the world, the system now has international reach. Arvigo® therapists respect and honor the cultural traditions from which the technique came. We support the people of Belize and care for the rainforest, which sustains the people of Central America.

The treatment protocol has been traditionally used in women’s health care to address:

  • Painful or irregular menstrual cycles, or abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Bladder or yeast infections
  • Miscarriages and difficult pregnancies
  • Peri-menopause and menopause symptoms
  • Endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Fertility challenges
  • Digestive upset
  • Displaced or prolapsed uterus and/or bladder
  • Pelvic congestion, pain, PMS
  • The support of a healthy pregnancy, labor, and delivery
  • Assists in recovery after birth
  • Back pain

How does the treatment protocol support women’s health?

Arvigo® treatment increases the flow of blood (both venous and arterial blood), lymph, nervous system messages, and chi or life energy through the pelvic region. The practitioner applies the techniques and teaches self-care techniques. The client can then continue to make healing progress on their own at home. Advanced techniques for pregnant and non-pregnant clients support pelvic health by addressing issues with the sacrum and tail bone, as well as encouraging proper positioning of the uterus within the body.

What can I expect from an initial session?

At your initial visit, your practitioner reviews a detailed intake form with you. They explain what the treatment entails. You will disrobe to your comfort level. Many of the techniques are similar to massage, including oil or lotion on your skin. Typically, the treatment includes work on your abdomen, your back including hips, sacrum, and the lower back. This will take up to about 45 minutes to complete.

What can I expect after a session?

Many people notice a shift in their balance or feel more centered in their bodies. You may also notice that you feel a little more emotional than usual. There may be a shift in urine, bowel, or menstrual blood. Generally, these shifts are a normal part of the healing process. You should discuss any unexpected symptoms with your practitioner. Especially if you have concerns or worries about anything you are experiencing.

What about self-care?

Your practitioner should instruct you on how to perform the self-care techniques on your abdomen. Additionally, you will receive written directions for performing the work at home. We suggest making this a daily practice, or at least several times per week.

Are there any times I should not get an Arvigo ® Treatment?

  • During your menses (the upper work and the back may be done at this time, but if you are experiencing uterine bleeding treatment will have modifications)
  • In the presence of cancer
  • With an active uterine, bladder, or other pelvic infection
  • If you have an IUD in place
  • During the 1st trimester of pregnancy
  • If you have an abdominal or pelvic mesh in your body
